Organs Involved in Detoxification

Although the liver gets most of the attention, detoxification is a whole-body process. The kidneys filter blood and help remove water-soluble wastes in urine; the gut eliminates bile-bound compounds in stool; the lungs remove volatile compounds through exhalation; and the skin acts as a barrier and may facilitate limited excretion through sweat.

The gut microbiome also matters. Gut bacteria interact with bile acids, estrogen metabolites, and other compounds, and they can either support healthy elimination or contribute to recirculation and inflammation when the microbial balance is disturbed.
