Thinning Hair Treatment: 5 Ways to Support Fuller, Healthier Hair

Minoxidil is one of the most studied options for thinning hair treatment. Its topical form is FDA-approved for androgenetic alopecia, the common pattern of hair loss. A 2024 trial found that a 5 mg daily oral dose worked about as well. Either way, it takes patience: in long-term follow-up, regrowth peaked at about one year.

A Blood Pressure Pill With a Surprising Side Effect

In the 1970s, doctors had a promising new pill for a stubborn problem. Minoxidil was built for severe high blood pressure, the kind that didn’t respond to other drugs (Patel et al., 2023). It did its job. It also did something no one expected.

Patients started growing hair.

About one in five people taking oral minoxidil grew extra hair, a side effect doctors call hypertrichosis (Patel et al., 2023). Physicians also noticed that some balding patients were regrowing hair on their scalps (Suchonwanit et al., 2019†).

For a blood pressure drug, that was an odd line on the résumé. For anyone watching a hairline retreat, it was the most interesting news in years.

About two decades later, medicine repeated itself. Researchers developed sildenafil to treat angina, chest pain caused by reduced blood flow to the heart. Early volunteers reported a different side effect: stronger, longer-lasting erections (Rettner, 2017). That made two drugs built around circulation, and two famous detours.

That shared history is why minoxidil, tadalafil, and vardenafil often show up together. Today, minoxidil for hair loss comes in two forms: a pill, and a solution or foam applied to the scalp. But first, the hair. Here are five research-based ways to support fuller, healthier hair.

1. Understand the Hair Growth Cycle

Every hair on your head follows a schedule. The hair growth cycle has two main phases: anagen, the active growth stage, and telogen, the resting stage. Minoxidil appears to keep hair in anagen longer, which may mean longer, thicker strands. It may also wake resting follicles sooner* (Patel et al., 2023).

So the goal isn’t to create new hair from nothing. It’s to keep the growth phase running longer.

Exactly how minoxidil does this is still an open question. It widens blood vessels by opening ATP-sensitive potassium channels (Patel et al., 2023). In lab research, it also increased activity of the VEGF gene, which helps the body build new blood vessels (Suchonwanit et al., 2019†). Even so, researchers haven’t mapped the full path from drug to new growth (Suchonwanit et al., 2019†).

2. Start With the Option That Has the Longest Track Record

Topical minoxidil has been around for decades. The 2% solution reached the market in 1986, and the 5% version followed in 1993 (Suchonwanit et al., 2019†). Androgenetic alopecia, better known as pattern hair loss, is the only FDA-approved use for topical minoxidil (Patel et al., 2023).

That long history makes topical minoxidil a standard thinning hair treatment. Decades of use also mean its benefits and drawbacks are well documented. For a wider look at the options, see our guide to strategies for combating hair loss.

3. Compare Oral vs Topical Minoxidil

Here, the story circles back to where it began. A 2024 randomized trial followed 90 men with androgenetic alopecia for 24 weeks. One group took 5 mg of oral minoxidil daily. The other applied 5% topical minoxidil twice a day. Both worked about equally well* (Penha et al., 2024).

The oral group did better in one area: hair density at the crown (Ebell, 2025). If twice-daily scalp applications feel like a chore, that’s worth knowing. Oral minoxidil for hair loss is prescribed off-label, so the choice belongs in a conversation with a licensed provider.

4. Weigh Minoxidil Side Effects Before You Choose

Every form has its trade-offs. In that same trial, the original side effect returned for an encore. Extra body hair appeared in 49% of the oral group, compared with 25% of the topical group. Headaches affected 14% of the oral group and 2% of the topical group (Ebell, 2025).

Scalp eczema ran the other way. It showed up in 16% of people using topical minoxidil, compared with 2% of those taking the pill (Ebell, 2025). Knowing those numbers up front turns a guess into a decision.

Outcome (2024 trial) Oral minoxidil, 5 mg daily Topical minoxidil, 5% twice daily
Overall hair growth at 24 weeks Similar Similar
Crown hair density Greater improvement Less improvement
Extra body hair 49% 25%
Headache 14% 2%
Scalp eczema 2% 16%

5. Give Minoxidil Time to Work

How long does minoxidil take to work? Longer than most people hope. Hair keeps its own calendar. Researchers who followed men using topical minoxidil for five years found that regrowth peaked at about the one-year mark (Suchonwanit et al., 2019†). The 2024 trial measured its results at 24 weeks (Penha et al., 2024).

Judging results after a few weeks is like leaving a ballgame in the first inning. You’ll miss most of what happens.

Where Tadalafil and Vardenafil Fit

Tadalafil and vardenafil aren’t hair drugs. Some people search for tadalafil for hair loss, but that isn’t what it’s approved for.

Both belong to sildenafil’s drug class, the PDE5 inhibitors. The FDA approved both for erectile dysfunction in 2003 (Arnold, 2004). By blocking the PDE5 enzyme, they help smooth muscle relax so more blood can flow into erectile tissue during arousal. The main difference between them is timing.

Vardenafil: the sprinter

Reaches peak blood levels in about 0.7 hours and stays effective for about four hours** (Arnold, 2004).

Tadalafil: the marathoner

Has a half-life of 17.5 hours. In studies, most patients could have intercourse up to 36 hours after a dose** (Arnold, 2004).

That shared focus on blood flow is the idea behind GrowRx, a once-daily prescription tablet with 2.5 mg each of minoxidil, tadalafil, and vardenafil. A licensed provider reviews your health history before prescribing it. Minoxidil has been studied for hair. Tadalafil and vardenafil have been studied for erectile function.* All three work by helping blood vessels relax and open.

About 50 years ago, a blood pressure pill grew hair on patients who never asked for it. Medicine didn’t plan that result, but it learned from it.

Sometimes the most useful thing a pill does is the thing nobody ordered.

Frequently Asked Questions About Thinning Hair Treatment

How long does minoxidil take to work?

Minoxidil works slowly. A 2024 trial comparing oral and topical forms measured results at 24 weeks. In a five-year follow-up of men using topical minoxidil, regrowth peaked at about one year. Judging results after only a few weeks is likely too early.

Is oral or topical minoxidil better for thinning hair?

Neither form is best for everyone. Topical minoxidil has the longest track record and is FDA-approved for androgenetic alopecia. In a 2024 trial, 5 mg of oral minoxidil daily worked about as well as 5% topical minoxidil used twice a day. The oral form did better for crown density.

Does minoxidil create new hair follicles?

The research doesn’t suggest it does. Minoxidil appears to lengthen the anagen, or growth, phase of existing follicles. It may also help resting follicles start growing again sooner.

The Bottom Line on Thinning Hair Treatment

Minoxidil remains one of the best-studied options for androgenetic alopecia. Topical minoxidil has the longest track record, and a 2024 trial suggests a daily pill works about as well, with different trade-offs. Whichever form you and a licensed provider choose, plan on giving it a full year.
