"The worst time to prepare is after you're already sick."

— Dr. Drew Pinsky

Prescription medications are dispensed only if a licensed provider determines they are appropriate after reviewing your medical intake. Based on allergies and other medical details, one or more medications may be substituted or not prescribed. Each kit is intended for use only by the person for whom it is prescribed. Antibiotics do not treat viral infections such as the common cold or flu. The kit is not a substitute for emergency care — call 911 in an emergency.

Dr. Drew's 5 Healthy Hacks for Cold & Flu Season

Know them now. Have them ready before the first sniffle.

Healthy Hack #1

From The Wellness Company

Immune Defense Nasal + Throat Sprays

Support your first line of defense — the nose and throat.

The nasal spray pairs xylitol + erythritol with saline to moisturize and help clear allergens and mucus. The throat spray combines zinc bisglycinate, quercetin, perilla and bee propolis to support immune and throat health.*

Use early. Keep the pair ready.

02

Zinc Lozenges

The hack isn't zinc. It's timing.

Oral zinc lozenges may shorten a cold when started early. The key is having them available at the first sign of symptoms rather than waiting several days.

Oral zinc only — never intranasal zinc.

03

Vitamin C

Many people may be using vitamin C backwards.

The better evidence isn't for waiting until you're sick and then loading up. Regular vitamin C use may modestly shorten a cold or reduce symptom severity.

Vitamin C before. Zinc at the first sign.

04

Acetaminophen + Ibuprofen

Write down WHAT you took, HOW MUCH, and WHEN.

They're different medications, and in appropriate patients clinicians sometimes alternate them for fever or pain. Check combination cold medications so you don't accidentally double-dose acetaminophen.

Keep a simple dose log.

05

Honey for Cough

Sometimes Grandma got it right.

Honey has surprisingly good evidence for helping nighttime cough.

Not for infants under 12 months.

Common Questions

How do I get the Medical Emergency Kit?

After you order, you will be emailed or texted instructions to complete a medical history form. Once submitted, a licensed provider reviews your request and, if appropriate, prescribes the medications. A US pharmacy fills the kit and it ships to you free.

Will antibiotics help with a cold or the flu?

No — antibiotics do not treat viral infections. The kit is there if your provider determines a cold has turned into a bacterial infection, such as a sinus or respiratory infection, or for other common conditions covered in the guidebook.

Who can use the kit?

Each kit is intended for use only by the person for whom it is prescribed. Based on allergies and other medical details, some medications may be substituted or not prescribed.

Does the bag come with these items?

No. "What to Pack In Your Bag" is a guide to help you build your own cold and flu kit. The Wellness Company carries Immune Defense Nasal + Throat Sprays and Vitamin C; the other items are general good practice to gather yourself.

What's in the Immune Defense Sprays?

Nasal spray: xylitol + erythritol, saline and grapefruit seed extract. Throat spray: zinc bisglycinate, quercetin, perilla (luteolin), bee propolis and CytoGuard® for clean preservation.

When should I use zinc?

Timing is the hack. Oral zinc lozenges may shorten a cold when started at the first sign of symptoms. Use oral zinc only — never intranasal zinc.

Can I take acetaminophen and ibuprofen together?

They are different medications, and clinicians sometimes alternate them for fever or pain in appropriate patients. Ask your clinician first, write down what you took, how much and when, and check combination cold products for acetaminophen.

Is honey safe for everyone?

Honey has good evidence for nighttime cough, but it should never be given to infants under 12 months.

Don't be scared, be prepared.
